The Chemins de fer de l'État was an early French railway company which was founded in 1878. In 1938 the company merged to- gether with all the other railway companies to form the single new railway company SNCF. French railway companies made in- tense use of promotional bookmarks in order to promote touristical destinations they were serving with their nets like these Art Nouveau bookmarks promoting Brittany, Normandy and Vendée, a department in west central France, on Atlantic Ocean.
