1902 CORONATION OF KING EDWARD VII bookmark made of stiff card 164 x 54 mm the reverse displays advertisement for the Singer Sewing Machines Edward was the eldest son of Queen Victoria and ascended the throne on January 22, 1901 upon Victoria's death. Born in 1841 he had to wait a long time to succeed to the throne. He married Princess Alexandra of Denmark (picture on the bookmark) in 1863 who bore him three sons and three daughters. The coronation was originally scheduled for June 26, 1902, but Edward had to undergo an emergency appendectomy operation, so the coronation was postponed until August 9, 1902. It was a pity for several memorabilia producers for most items like coins and our bookmark here were already produced and showed the wrong date. Luckily for the company Singer Sewing Machines, the producer of this bookmark, there was some space above and beneath the lithographed date, so they could print the words "postponed from" and the new date on the bookmark using a stamp. This can easily be seen at a closer look as the stamp left a deep impression on the card. |
