The second-hand bookshop Laarmans is owned
by August
Verdonck and specializes in Dutch Indie letters and literature.
Frans Laarmans is the name of a character in the work of the
Flemish
author Willem Elsschot. In the review by Chris Baker
written about Elsschot's novel Cheese, where Laarmans is
the protagonist, we read: "I suspect that there is
a bit of
Laarmans in everyone. Everyone eventually daydreams about
leaving our
daily jobs and making it on our own." After this
words, I guess to know why August Verdonck named his
shop after Laarmans in 1989.
