Bookmarks - a species wakes up from a long sleep

Since their first commercial production as advertising giveaways around 1850
bookmarks bore a marginal existence in the shadow of book pages. But now bookmarks
seem definetely to overcome their ostensible purpose of being a mere aid to read a book
and come up with their own printed information, a curious history of origins and a great
variety of forms and materials. Consequently, bookmarks attract an increasing attention
from museums, artists, book lovers and collectors as an individual genre these days.

Lesezeichen - eine Gattung wacht aus dem Dornröschenschlaf auf

Seit ihrer ersten kommerziellen Produktion um 1850 als kostenlos verteilte Reklameträger
fristeten die Lesezeichen bis in unsere Tage hinein ein Leben im Schatten der Buchseiten.
